00:36:44: can't

00:36:46: breathe.

00:36:50: Yo, yo, what's up?

00:36:55: Yo, yo, yo.

00:37:31: Yeah, I can hear you make it hear me good?

00:37:34: Yeah, I hear you.

00:37:35: My good shit man, welcome to the mixtape addict radio show man.

00:37:40: We're connecting the dots from France to the US as we usually do and today I have a mixtape legend in the building, superstar Jay.

00:37:49: How you doing man?

00:37:51: Man, I'm blessed man.

00:37:53: Thank you for having me on your platform.

00:37:55: You know, it feels good to have everyone out in France knowing my legacy and what I did for the game.

00:38:03: Yeah man.

00:38:03: That's dope.

00:38:05: Yeah, it's a pleasure to have you on man.

00:38:07: Like you seen with my post where I tagged you with that mixtape cover that I found.

00:38:13: You know that was in the rap US magazine.

00:38:16: Man, I had to have you on there so you can let the people know.

00:38:19: But before that, I have a tradition in the show.

00:38:23: I have to ask you man, who is your all time favorite DJ?

00:38:31: Your mixtape DJ?

00:38:32: Like when you hear the word DJ, who first comes to your mind?

00:38:37: Because you know, it's kind of like different verific, how would I say it?

00:38:46: It's different type of formats of DJing.

00:38:49: You got party DJs, you got mixtape DJs that really excel to mixtapes.

00:38:57: So

00:38:59: far as my all-time favorite mixtape DJ would be DJ Clue.

00:39:05: My all-around

00:39:07: party All-time favorite party DJ would be Kit Capri.

00:39:11: Yeah,

00:39:13: two legendary DJs, man.

00:39:14: And tell the people, you know, for those who don't know, tell the people why especially those two.

00:39:22: Because I grew up listening to Clue.

00:39:28: You know, I know him personally.

00:39:31: But I grew up listening to him as a kid.

00:39:33: I seen how he changed the game for the mixtape game.

00:39:37: far

00:39:38: as

00:39:39: Putting mixtapes out and um making mixtape DJs become millionaires and become bigger.

00:39:46: um that was like incredible.

00:39:49: and him

00:39:50: um

00:39:52: Not just sitting as being a mixtape DJ and becoming a one of the one of the best I could say radio personalities For New York City.

00:40:03: He's been doing it like over twenty years.

00:40:05: So he's been doing something right.

00:40:07: um putting out a mixtape album Putting out an album as a DJ of shit man.

00:40:15: There's so many putting out doing everything that a DJ's dream being rich off a DJ and being a millionaire.

00:40:23: You know creating an artist, you know making a legendary artist and putting them on fabulous and You know just legendary albums is first.

00:40:32: I think he was one of the first DJs to go platinum for a mixtape

00:40:36: album.

00:40:37: So, you know, he's very legendary.

00:40:39: Yup, yup man he changed the game you know when it comes to doing that because people knew him as a mixtape DJ.

00:40:46: then they're starting seeing the the clue albums where people like what the fuck is going on like.

00:40:51: he's a mixtape DJ and he's putting out album.

00:40:54: you can see his stuff in Walmart.

00:40:56: all that he definitely changed the game and so I guess that was a big inspiration for you when you started doing tapes and especially for your mixtape series.

00:41:06: I am mixtapes.

00:41:08: Yeah, definitely.

00:41:09: Um, it was, um, it was an inspiration because, you know, I came up listening to him.

00:41:15: So when I, when I became, um, in that bracket, as you know, I kind of came at the same, like the ending of him really dropping mixtapes like that.

00:41:27: And, um, but I'm proud to say I was like one of the guys that they had to clue mixtape to superstar J mixtape.

00:41:33: And, um, you know, I'm proud to, you know, but, you know, be a part of that mixtape game.

00:41:39: Yeah, man, you left a mark in hip-hop history, you know?

00:41:43: I'm the proof of that, you know?

00:41:45: See, I'm thirty-one years old, man, and like fifteen years ago, twenty years ago, something like that, you know, we were bumping the superstar Jay Mixtapes already, you know?

00:41:55: And

00:41:56: how did you link up with that French magazine?

00:41:59: It was called Rap US Magazine, and they told you to do a mixtape for them.

00:42:03: That was, you know, a big thing for you to get your name out there in Europe.

00:42:09: I kind of feel like I was ahead of my time for marketing myself.

00:42:12: I think a lot of DJs didn't understand the marketing strategy of becoming a big DJ.

00:42:22: So a lot of times, you know, any opportunity I would get that I feel that would push my brand nationwide or all around the U.S.

00:42:34: I've never had a problem with that.

00:42:35: I've never had a problem with people bootlegging my, um, mixtapes.

00:42:38: I've kind of felt like if you got bootleg, you was hot.

00:42:43: And I actually transferred it to me getting all across the U.S.

00:42:48: and countries that people know.

00:42:50: So I think the bootleg actually made my brand bigger.

00:42:53: I accepted it.

00:42:54: I got my piece and they got this.

00:42:56: But they actually paid me.

00:42:58: You know, people are like, oh, you don't get paid at a bootleg.

00:43:01: Nah, that was like the best marketing.

00:43:04: Of situation for you because they actually would get you to places that you was not getting to.

00:43:10: So I will see my mixtapes everywhere.

00:43:13: Yeah, you know people went crazy back then with uh, you know because people gotta understand.

00:43:18: I don't I don't know if it's something that was really popular in America But out there in Europe we had the physical magazines and they gave mixtapes like CDs, you know in the magazines as a gift when you buy it.

00:43:30: So the Superstar J mixtapes were distributed nationwide because of that.

00:43:37: Oh, man, that's dope, man.

00:43:38: I never knew that, too.

00:43:39: I didn't know how big it was out in, you know, out where you at.

00:43:43: But I'm glad, like, what is it, fifteen years later, we talking and talking about it.

00:43:48: Yup, yup.

00:43:50: And to be very honest with you, man, you were one of my biggest inspirations when it came to doing mixtapes.

00:43:55: Oh, wow.

00:43:55: When I was a kid, like I told you, I discovered you with that magazine, and then I started, you know, looking up the I Am Mixtape series.

00:44:04: And, you know, I was listening to that, like, every time you dropped one.

00:44:07: So

00:44:08: you left

00:44:08: a mark in mixtape history for sure, man.

00:44:11: Man, I appreciate that, man.

00:44:13: Thank you.

00:44:14: Yeah, bro, you're welcome.

00:44:15: You're welcome, man.

00:44:17: And do you see a future for mixtapes?

00:44:20: So like the way maybe vinyl came back, we've seen the return of boom back, you know, that came back.

00:44:25: Some dudes never stopped doing it.

00:44:27: And it's a great thing.

00:44:28: But we've seen a return of that, the authentic music.

00:44:31: And do you see a future for mixtapes?

00:44:33: Like maybe a new way to distribute them or something like that?

00:44:38: Yes, of course.

00:44:38: You see it now.

00:44:40: Mixtapes are playlist now, you know?

00:44:42: The mixtapes are a playlist mixtapes like when you do the r&b mixtape.

00:44:46: that was a. That was a. you know, that's a r&b playlist on apple music or title or amazon Whatever you do they put they just putting up the best music and it's a playlist.

00:44:56: It's just streaming.

00:44:57: now.

00:44:57: then also you got artists that respect the coaching and are actually doing like you know mixtapes with DJs and putting that putting it out as albums.

00:45:08: You see a couple of artists did that right now.

00:45:11: You see game.

00:45:11: Just put out one with DJ drama.

00:45:13: drama's been doing a lot of gangster grills that been put out as an album as a project.

00:45:20: Tyler created that one with drama.

00:45:23: So yeah, you see what's going on.

00:45:25: Yep.

00:45:25: And we heard DJ Clue in the Clips album.

00:45:29: Yep.

00:45:30: Clue Clue was on the Clips album.

00:45:33: I just seen Conway.

00:45:35: He just did something with Who Kid.

00:45:37: with Tony Ayo and who kid was introducing it.

00:45:40: So I don't think Mixtape's ever left.

00:45:42: It was just in another format.

00:45:45: Do you think streaming platforms kind of stole the Mixtape format to the DJs?

00:45:51: Of course they did, but I mean, you gotta go with the technology the way life is.

00:45:59: Nothing's gonna stay the same and you gotta be a person to always adapt to what's new.

00:46:03: And that's what I always felt.

00:46:06: Was against anything that became new because if you stay in the past Your career can actually just stand still.

00:46:12: So I've always Related with the past.

00:46:15: if you see how my career is, um, I went from mixtapes.

00:46:18: I've seen how mixtapes was going.

00:46:20: I've seen how mixtapes started to get on websites and you had to accept that because then it became for you.

00:46:28: then you actually had to You know be have a relationship with these websites to get your mixtapes.

00:46:33: So I I had the golden relationship to have.

00:46:36: you know our friendship was all a mixtape website.

00:46:39: so that became big for me because if you go to their website still I mean if you go to their website now they still got my mixtapes up.

00:46:47: so like I probably don't even have all those mixtapes.

00:46:50: and when I created the iron mixtape series I wanted people to know you know know know my mixtapes.

00:46:57: when I was doing mixtapes before I always used to just

00:47:00: do

00:47:00: a bunch of titles so people would never know how I was branding myself.

00:47:05: so I figured out like I am legend let me do.

00:47:08: I am mix tapes and I did one two three four and I think I did.

00:47:13: I got to like

00:47:14: two hundred

00:47:15: mix tapes from there.

00:47:17: I did my research.

00:47:18: you you stopped by two hundred and eleven.

00:47:20: oh man wow two hundred and eleven man.

00:47:23: you gotta put this up.

00:47:24: I definitely gotta put this interview up man and um You know do it.

00:47:29: I'm sorry.

00:47:30: I was driving.

00:47:31: I couldn't get to my studio.

00:47:32: It would have been a little bit better me being on the computer.

00:47:35: But um, it's all good man.

00:47:36: It's authentic.

00:47:37: You know you and your car, you know, man, it's authentic man.

00:47:40: We like that.

00:47:41: Yes

00:47:42: Yeah, what can we do?

00:47:43: Two hundred and

00:47:43: eleven mixtapes.

00:47:44: That's dope

00:47:45: man.

00:47:45: Yeah, two hundred and and just for the I am mixtape series.

00:47:48: because I guess yeah,

00:47:49: that's just for the series They don't understand that.

00:47:51: like I had other mixtapes with that.

00:47:53: So, yeah, that's dope.

00:47:55: I also remember the one you did with the green... Oh,

00:48:02: yeah, yeah.

00:48:02: I used to do the green stuff at Superstar.

00:48:07: I was always creative, man.

00:48:09: I always did my thing with the creative process of mixtapes.

00:48:14: I think it was called how Superstar J stole the exclusive, I think.

00:48:19: Yeah,

00:48:19: yeah.

00:48:20: I stole the exclusive.

00:48:21: I think I did my last one.

00:48:24: um I was actually trying to do an album with that but I'm actually in the works of doing a uh actually a mixtape album with various artists.

00:48:32: so I'm that's exclusive.

00:48:34: I can't give you who I'm doing it with but you brought that up.

00:48:37: so I'm gonna let you know.

00:48:39: I wasn't gonna ask you anyway bro you know you know I had to.

00:48:42: yeah definitely so look out look out for that.

00:48:46: I need to come out there man we need to um do a show or something you know I need.

00:48:50: I've never been out in France.

00:48:52: so

00:48:53: well shit people know you out there man like when I posted that cover.

00:48:56: dude you're like oh shit man that's old school right there.

00:48:59: yeah yeah yeah

00:49:01: yeah definitely mm-hmm.

00:49:02: what do you think about all the European hip-hop whether it's the artists or the audience out there?

00:49:08: what do you think?

00:49:09: I mean it's worldwide.

00:49:11: now man you know like you got these sites the streaming sites where You can get your music now.

00:49:19: It's universal.

00:49:20: It ain't like you got to go through everything with mix tapes, do a CD and try to get it somewhere.

00:49:26: Now on a drop of a button, anybody can listen to your music.

00:49:30: And you see how the streaming platforms are very supportive of international music.

00:49:37: So that's a good thing.

00:49:39: Yeah.

00:49:39: Can we expect maybe Overseas artists on one of your future mixtape slash albums?

00:49:47: Man, let me know man.

00:49:49: You you the plug man.

00:49:50: Let me know who's hot man.

00:49:51: You know what?

00:49:51: I'm here.

00:49:52: That's

00:49:53: not I've never.

00:49:54: I would love to have one on there

00:49:56: For sure for sure.

00:49:56: I'll send you some stuff man so you can you know get

00:49:59: you.

00:49:59: Yeah, who's

00:50:00: who's

00:50:00: who's who's who out there, you know

00:50:03: Yeah, man, and let's go back in time man.

00:50:06: Like do you remember the day?

00:50:08: when you decided to take your career as a DJ seriously and start flooding the streets with mixtape?

00:50:18: Definitely when I got out of college.

00:50:21: I was DJing in college and I came home and I was just trying to figure out the game, but I already had the game a little bit.

00:50:30: I knew the game already.

00:50:33: I just had to organize it because I already knew how to get it like exclusives from.

00:50:37: I think I was a little bit ahead of my time because I was in school.

00:50:40: So I had people that knew how to get music from the from the computer, you know I mean from the internet and I started getting new songs from there and a lot of DJs had to catch up because they didn't have that that access that I had.

00:50:55: So that's where I really started, you know when I came home I I didn't know what I wanted to do and I was like yo, I'm gonna just drop mix tapes and The first mixtape didn't work, and then the second one almost didn't work, but I kept on going.

00:51:08: And after that, I just started seeing more people vibing to my mixtapes.

00:51:14: And I kind of felt like I was going to be big anyway, because I was very ahead

00:51:19: of my time

00:51:19: with marketing.

00:51:20: I knew I could host good.

00:51:22: I knew how to host.

00:51:23: I knew about the mixtape game.

00:51:25: I didn't jump in there and not know about it.

00:51:27: So it worked for me.

00:51:30: Yeah, you definitely knew how to host it man.

00:51:32: I remember them.

00:51:34: Yeah, yeah, and that brought you a opportunity to work at shade forty-five.

00:51:39: after that, you know

00:51:41: Yeah, definitely um

00:51:44: My

00:51:44: bad my Yeah, they um, uh DJ stuff gave me the opportunity.

00:51:49: He's a D. He's a big DJ in New York And he asked me to rock out with him.

00:51:54: and then um actually I didn't know.

00:51:57: one of the bosses That work there was like, yeah, we asked about you, you know, because you was hiding the streets.

00:52:02: We were seeing the superstar, you know, be, you know, be a part of DJ Self Show.

00:52:07: So long story short, DJ Self went on Love and Hip Hop and he actually was on Power One on Five out here at Biggs Radio Station.

00:52:15: And he couldn't really do his show anymore.

00:52:18: And they see me grinding, see me working, and they actually just gave me the show.

00:52:23: And from there, I just worked.

00:52:25: No.

00:52:25: no that's super dope right there.

00:52:27: so you see you know it's giving a lot of motivation to other DJs.

00:52:31: you know showing that you can.

00:52:32: you know start from mixtape start in the streets keep flooding the streets and then you end up at a major radio station like that.

00:52:39: yeah yeah you know working for Eminem that's a dream you know I really work for Eminem for his station.

00:52:44: shout out to Paul Rosenberg Eminem's partner and they gave me a they gave me a chance and I'm actually a host for For the shade forty-fives ten point five countdown where we count that we count down the hottest records of the week.

00:53:01: I do that every week.

00:53:02: I also do a commercial voiceovers for flex To K for a series XM another channel there and I actually just signed it signed a contract with Kevin arts Station to do the voiceovers for his station too.

00:53:17: So So

00:53:20: yeah, super dope man You know, it's good to see you, you know, getting opportunities like that.

00:53:25: You know, especially like a person like me that show, I mean, they've seen your grind, you know, over the years.

00:53:31: Yeah.

00:53:32: It's a full-time grind, bro.

00:53:33: It's not, it's not, it's not no walk in the park.

00:53:35: I tell you that.

00:53:37: Like, so I appreciate you seeing my progress.

00:53:40: Yeah, man.

00:53:41: I've seen you, man.

00:53:42: You know, I'm out there in France, but I mean, I'm looking at the things, man.

00:53:46: That's dope, man.

00:53:48: Yeah, do you have any advice man for the upcoming DJs slash entrepreneurs out there?

00:53:54: I mean

00:53:55: my advice is you know It's not it's very easy.

00:53:59: Just stay consistent.

00:54:00: Um

00:54:01: know what you want to do?

00:54:03: It's not like the the same culture we have now where it was like a handful of DJs now It's a little bit more harder to become a standout DJ because there's so many people that can be a DJ now.

00:54:15: so you know It's just, when you get an opportunity, you just recognize your opportunities, but you know, always have a backup

00:54:22: plan because

00:54:23: it's just so many people DJing now, so many people doing it.
