00:32:08: I don't know, like...I think we probably just started messaging each other or like yo dope shit, dope shit.
00:32:16: and then you start workin' from there man.
00:32:18: And y'know i really liked his bars.
00:32:21: it's very like..you know go fuck yourself type music and that feels perfect for beats.
00:32:28: so why not work together?
00:32:29: You know what I mean?
00:32:32: Very aggressive, very ignorant bars on ignorant beats.
00:32:37: It just fits perfectly.
00:32:40: Yes you know it's fun music to listen too!
00:32:42: It is all called hip-hop.
00:32:44: You at the same time gives your good feeling and can have a good laugh hearing what Coach LoCastro was saying.
00:32:53: The
00:32:55: funny bars.
00:32:56: I remember this one song we did.
00:33:02: It was produced by my homie, Nohokai.
00:33:05: The song is called Pondy and I remember like he inspired me to start throwing in funny bars.
00:33:12: so yeah it's definitely a dope style because most of its like.
00:33:18: i'm gonna punch you on the face fuck you but then here's a funny bar for you to laugh at as well.
00:33:23: don't take it too seriously You know?
00:33:26: Yup yup!
00:33:27: Its good stuff man.
00:33:28: it kind reminds me of like a mix of Slim Shady and Cypress Hill You know, all that shit mixed together.
00:33:37: Yeah bro and if I'm not mistaken you're in Texas right?
00:33:41: yeah currently i am in uh houston texas.
00:33:44: okay dope!
00:33:45: And i know your sound is not the same as like the houston hardest that we hear all the time.
00:33:51: but do you rock with guys like paul wall zero little kiki guy's like that?
00:33:57: Like im aware of it...I've heard it..i've listened to it fan of that style.
00:34:05: And I don't, you know people might give me hate for that but it's just...I'm not from Houston!
00:34:10: You know what i'm saying?
00:34:10: Like.
00:34:11: I'm originally from Washington state right so the northwest is where I'm from and I fell in love with music all the way on the east.
00:34:24: you know what I mean?
00:34:24: So its weird.
00:34:26: It's mad weird.
00:34:29: Being in Houston for the first time was when I was a teenager with the high school and Houston for a little bit And like, you know everyone was listening to this.
00:34:39: You know Like the wrap down in Houston.
00:34:41: And I was like yeah It's cool it's not-it doesn't do nothing For me personally but like...I appreciate it!
00:34:48: You Know what i mean?
00:34:50: Everyone has their own flavor and sometimes The Flavor isn't for you.
00:34:56: Yeah, yeah I understand that you want to do the Holocaust type stuff But you know how could hear your y'all?
00:35:03: Your work with somebody like skull face for example.
00:35:06: right
00:35:08: You know it's different.
00:35:09: You notice the
00:35:10: h-town
00:35:10: lyricism?
00:35:12: Right, right
00:35:14: That could be no good mixture bro
00:35:16: It couldn't we're good for sure.
00:35:17: and really surprised me when um Like for example when DJ Premier did all that worked with um like two chains.
00:35:28: It was surprisingly super fucking dope.
00:35:31: Yep,
00:35:32: you never know.
00:35:34: yeah man You gotta be creative and put all those creative minds in the one room.
00:35:39: And don't what can happen?
00:35:42: That makes me think of static selector and Bun B
00:35:45: too.
00:35:46: Yeah, bun b is dope.
00:35:48: I fuck with bun b. He's super dope.
00:35:52: H town legend man shout out to bun b And let's go back in time.
00:35:57: man, like what made you want to take things seriously and become a professional music producer?
00:36:03: Like do you remember the day when you decided to start Things For Real.
00:36:08: Yeah so I'll try to shorten it as much as i can.
00:36:15: but um...I've always wanted to do some sort of hip-hop music.
00:36:24: And the first time I ever recorded a rap song like actually, like record it was on my homies big brother's computer because he has a computer.
00:36:33: He had a computer with a microphone in little shitty just horrible setup.
00:36:39: So the first times that i've ever recorded is in middle school Like I was a little kid and then there came a time where I wanted to take raps seriously And I was doing shows in my hometown, you know opening up for people.
00:36:59: Doing parties like they would always have other acts.
00:37:04: all come together and
00:37:05: do show
00:37:05: at this bar You know?
00:37:08: Then one day i want to make my own beats by myself because it's hard find dope beats that you'd like For once when your struggling to get by its really is hard a producer to use their beats.
00:37:27: So, and I was though but i was buying lots of beats from Big Grimes.
00:37:31: shout out the big grime's.
00:37:34: um...I was buying beat software some other producers..i can't remember like some producers that find off Soundcloud and shit like uh....but long story short as possible well like I decided to invest in myself then got them machine.
00:37:51: I wanted to get an MPC, my homie talked me out of it.
00:37:54: To get a machine or whatever.
00:37:57: and then i just fell in love with making beats so much.
00:38:01: And um...I was like- I don't even want to rap anymore Like..i wanna be the backbone!
00:38:07: I wanna make the beats that people rap on.
00:38:11: And yeah for whatever reason It switched like that and became super obsessed.
00:38:15: I might create digging every fucking week Fuckin' made as many beats I could and then it got to the point where i'm like holy shit that people are actually wanting to buy these.
00:38:26: um let's see if I can quit my job eventually in an idea.
00:38:31: yeah just...I don't know,it was really weird.
00:38:33: It was a sudden click okay?
00:38:38: I want to make beats so I dont wanna rap!
00:38:40: And Then I got back into rapping
00:38:42: because my homie did this for me.
00:38:43: but Do you think your being more creative with making beats or rapping?
00:38:53: You know, it's... I think its easier to be creative making beats.
00:39:01: But i think you can beat just as creative with rapping.
00:39:03: there are so many different things that you could do like different ways.
00:39:07: you could flip a rhyme scheme or It is..I Think Its Just As Creative but for me That Helped Me Be A Lot More Creative.
00:39:17: Making Beats For Sure!
00:39:19: I Think Its Easier To Be Creative Because you have so much more to work with, like drum selection sample selection instrument selection the way you mix things.
00:39:30: Audio engineering in itself is a whole other art form With rapping.
00:39:36: You got your voice and that's it but you can be just as creative with your voice I believe for sure.
00:39:44: It's a lot of things to deal with when you're a producer.
00:39:47: Just like you say gotta learn audio engineering also gotta learn at you.
00:39:52: sell yourself, you know.
00:39:53: You said quit your job so that you have to become kind of like a salesman with people...you know what I mean?
00:39:58: Like cut them deals and help...
00:40:01: Huge learning curve!
00:40:04: Yeah man.
00:40:05: For all the young upcoming producers who are maybe listening right now do we have any words or advice for them?
00:40:17: Don't sell yourselves short.
00:40:21: I know it's very, very exciting to be reached out by an artist.
00:40:28: you may look up too but no your worth.
00:40:31: and don't sell yourself short.
00:40:34: It is hard man.
00:40:35: there has been times where dope rappers that i've wanted work with for years they might not have a good deal.
00:40:49: so when Say no or like, you know don't be afraid to ask for more.
00:40:58: Like No your worth.
00:41:01: This shit doesn't happen overnight.
00:41:03: keep at it.
00:41:05: You know what I mean?
00:41:05: I've been doing this four.
00:41:08: i've Been doing It like professionally For ten years and I'm still not where I want To Be yet.
00:41:16: you Know What I Mean like.
00:41:18: it Takes a lot of Work And Dedication so Just Keep that in mind too.
00:41:25: So booktales and stay consistent.
00:41:29: Yep, and I think you know it's the work of a lifetime.
00:41:33: when you want to do that thing full-time become professional.
00:41:38: You can be music producer whatever audio engineer rapper Whatever but takes lifetimes And a lot of sacrifices.
00:41:46: then people forget about there sometimes.
00:41:48: Yeah!
00:41:48: And i'll also say this too like...you don't have just been a producer Full time Like When I first started I had a full-time job.
00:41:59: I hated my job and that's the only reason why i wanted to do music full time, but if you have a job that you don't mind... ...and you can also do Music Full Time like If You Can Find That Balance by All Means Do It because making beats uh full time is really hard work..you know?
00:42:17: ..You gotta really like.
00:42:19: okay how many streams of income can I make out of
00:42:23: this??
00:42:24: And it's not just making beats, its promoting yourself.
00:42:31: Making merch.
00:42:32: can I make content online that people would want to watch like live streams?
00:42:37: or you know what i mean?
00:42:38: It is a bunch of work that goes into it.
00:42:40: Do I Make A Patreon?
00:42:41: do this You Know?
00:42:44: Yep.
00:42:45: So if u have Like a full time job thats good That U enjoy But U also Enjoy Making Beats and Want To Turn Into Something.
00:42:54: See If U Can Do
00:42:55: Both Yeah, but I think if you do both.
00:42:58: You might like lose some hustle because If you don't have a plan B and just have music to pay the bills It's gonna be big pressure.
00:43:09: And
00:43:10: deal with that pressure.
00:43:11: Maybe the motivation of the hustle is going To different as if he had a nine or five The money coming in at the end Of week.
00:43:18: so we dont really hustle Like it should.
00:43:21: very true That's the life of this starving artist, you know.
00:43:29: It's rough but sometimes it makes better art.
00:43:33: You know what I mean?
00:43:34: Yeah
00:43:35: every artist man we come from some time rough places or we have a rough past and that is how best artists are created through struggle and sadness And all that you know its crazy
00:43:49: for real.
00:43:51: Oh yeah man, that's why you create.
00:43:53: sometimes the most amazing music is when you're feeling down.
00:43:57: You know what it is?
00:43:59: Yeah
00:43:59: for real!
00:44:02: Let us talk about some technical beatmaker stuff for all the beatmakers and music fans in general listening to right now.
00:44:10: Like as a producer What are your weapon of choice In terms of hardware And software?
00:44:16: So I love... Native Instruments machine.
00:44:22: I wanted to start with the MPC and sometimes, Sometimes i wonder what it would have been like if I did start at the MBC but The reason why started with a machine is because It was my first time ever having hands-on piece of gear And when I first starting making beats I started making beats Like A lot Of people Did.
00:44:44: Was FL Studio You know?
00:44:47: So My homie was like yo you might actually like Machine more Because you get the DAW aspect with hands-on.
00:44:54: So I was like, sure why not?
00:44:56: Well i've been using this machine for at least eleven years now and I used lots of other pieces of equipment Like...I did end up getting an MPC for a while And I loved it!
00:45:13: I thought that the MPC is super fun to use.
00:45:16: The only reason when I stopped using I like to be as consistent as i can because we were talking about, you know...I survive off this shit.
00:45:26: I need a post as much as possible and if I'm spending too much time learning the piece of gear it's almost not worth it for me cause there is something that Im trying figure out.
00:45:37: how do an MPC I could have already done in the machine?
00:45:42: split second but I love using Ableton For recording vocals and also bounce out stems from the machine.
00:45:55: put it in Ableton to run through my hardware like I got.
00:45:58: you know warm audio bus compressors or Run examples, too.
00:46:04: The sp-foro for mark two is always fun.
00:46:10: Yeah.
00:46:10: so My main piece of gear is a machine.
00:46:14: that's before four the machine DA and Ableton DA.
00:46:24: Have you ever thought about using keyboards or stuff like that, synthesizers?
00:46:30: Lots of synthesizer stuff.
00:46:32: right now I'm just using plugins to emulate classic synthesizers.
00:46:42: There's one called... I'm horrible at remembering names and shit.
00:46:50: I'm trying really hard not to gatekeep anything, but the UHE Diva is a pretty dope synthesizer plug-in.
00:47:00: And i use Massive by Native Instruments all of time and feel like Massive has heavily slept on.
00:47:05: But it's also digging and seeing who can find... Who makes dope presets?
00:47:13: You know you could make your own synth sounds.
00:47:15: I definitely want to look into getting more synthesizer hardware like my homie Bronco Bullfrog, he's crazy dope producer.
00:47:27: He's been telling me so you got get this move?
00:47:30: You gotta get that!
00:47:32: Yeah i do.
00:47:34: yeah man especially for your sound when you make those type of overall movie-type beats.
00:47:42: then come up with some synthesizers from the Hades
00:47:47: real for real and like there's other gear I've used.
00:47:50: Um, i had the Akai S-Nine fifty...i have two ASR TENS still.
00:47:56: um that had to SP twelve hundred..I've used lots of different gears.
00:48:03: it's all about just finding what you'd like to use You
00:48:06: know?
00:48:07: For me its the machines because I know it best.
00:48:11: Yeah when you're at the end of day The piece of gear is more about what's in your head, you know?
00:48:17: It has a musician there which he can create.
00:48:20: Yeah exactly
00:48:22: And if I'm not mistaken You were using a lot of samples and i think you switched to doing more like compositions because I heard it on your beats.
00:48:31: I've heard some synthesizer shit that you played yourself but its really dope man!
00:48:36: I am in this phase right now where... I used to be just samples when I first started and then learning how to compose stuff was even harder, but it became easier.
00:48:52: And now we're sampling is harder than composing.
00:48:55: you wouldn't think that's the case like sonically because there are a lot of dope samples.
00:49:05: They're super dope, but like they might be mixed weird and it's like how do I mix this in the beat?
00:49:09: So i'm In This Weird Bass right now where i'm trying not to use synthesizers as much.
00:49:16: The next batch of beats.
00:49:18: people are gonna hear It's Gonna Be a lot Less Synthesizer Because I want To try to find that balance again because me personally Like.
00:49:27: I fucking love the synthesizer shit!
00:49:30: I could Do synthesizer Shit all day.
00:49:32: But now I was getting to the point where it's even annoying me like, i don't want to reach synthesizer every time.
00:49:37: Like...I wanna get creative with the samples and just uh, bass lines more natural sounding shit but there will always definitely be a back-and-forth.
00:49:52: but I need to find balance because I feel that a lot of this shit lately has been synthesized.
00:49:58: Help me bro!
00:49:58: It is like a drug..it needs a synthesizer!
00:50:03: You know?
00:50:04: Yeah, but like you said... ...you gotta stay creative and sometimes get bored doing the same thing all of a sudden.
00:50:10: So it's good to switch up some times!
00:50:13: Oh yeah
00:50:14: And have you ever talked about working with live musicians?
00:50:19: Sorry what was that?
00:50:20: Have you ever told them about workin' with live musician?
00:50:23: Like working with guitar player who can do loops for you?
00:50:28: My girl is in band called Scarhead.
00:50:36: She's an incredible guitarist.
00:50:38: Like she can shred like it's mind-blowing and I remember one time, hey listen to this!
00:50:45: And she has her guitar and she is playing the melody of a beat that i made that day... ...and I was like how the fuck?
00:50:52: Like she could play from here in shit.
00:50:55: so we're trying to figure out because I want make sure its set up good but were gonna be sampling some other guitars soon for sure.
00:51:03: Oh yeah, and your name is Johnny Slash.
00:51:05: Gotta have some guitars in there.
00:51:07: Yeah, thanks.
00:51:09: Yeah.
00:51:10: Plug-ins that can emulate some guitar?
00:51:12: Like... There's been a bunch of beats actually where like I've used metal sounding guitars.
00:51:18: you know people are like damn.
00:51:19: why did you find that sample?
00:51:21: And i was like it wasn't the sample.
00:51:22: i think You're not playing on my pads but definitely want to sample some actual guitar.
00:51:28: We already plugged into interface a preamp.
00:51:34: that sounded pretty good but I want to make sure i'm doing it right.
00:51:37: if im going to be sampling guitar, ill wanna make sure its recorded correctly.
00:51:41: yes sir
00:51:42: well you know its kind of intimidating.
00:51:45: we'll figure out.
00:51:47: yeah it can't be intimidating when u do it once then twice and become natural after that.
00:51:53: thats what i sometimes do.
00:51:54: i make beats myself too.
00:51:55: i send my beats to some guitarist guys who i have.
00:51:59: one thats the jazz guitar player another is metal player.
00:52:03: so I have two different guys that i can send to you.
00:52:06: know
00:52:09: what gear do you use?
00:52:10: To make beats like
00:52:11: yeah, I've been using FL studio for a while.
00:52:14: Yeah uh...I used this little keyboard here.
00:52:19: okay
00:52:21: yeah Little Keyboard Here and another MPK upstairs.
00:52:26: I Have um mpc Studio nice in those controllers.
00:52:31: You Know if I want to fuck around with scratches on Stuff like this, you
00:52:35: know?
00:52:35: Yeah people really sleep on FL Studio man.
00:52:40: I remember... ...I liked using it when i first started making beats but.. ..I definitely wanted that hands-on feeling.
00:52:49: But I now know FL studio is just a beast It's.... I know people still use it And I know its even better than ever was.
00:53:01: You know what I mean?
00:53:04: They actually have a clipper.
00:53:07: I think it's called the fruity clipper or something like that, that's sought out for a lot of music making shit and then...I know there are plugins who try to emulate that.
00:53:19: Like i had an orange clipper And I used fucking time.
00:53:25: Yeah FL Studio is fucking dope!
00:53:27: Yeah It Is man..i've been using their for very long time.
00:53:30: I started making beats when i was nine years old.
00:53:32: bro I'm thirty-two now, so it's been a while.
00:53:39: You know what?
00:53:40: I tried something the other day... ...I tried to band lab app on my phone To make beats just to fuck around.
00:53:47: See what i can come up with.
00:53:50: Believe me or not!
00:53:51: Could create some good shit.
00:53:52: Then pull all of the stems and put them in FL Studio And reworked track professionally With professional sound.
00:53:59: It is super dope man.
00:54:00: you could just make beat on your phone.
00:54:02: I never did that before.
00:54:03: Yeah, I got the koala app.
00:54:06: Have you ever heard of Koala?
00:54:09: Oh bro!
00:54:09: You gotta look into Koala like that.
00:54:12: shit is great...I see people making crazy shit with Koala and then now um rolling to SP.
00:54:19: uh four four mark two.
00:54:21: they had an update where you could use it with your phone Like in-you can use It With Koala or some shit.
00:54:29: i don't know how it all works but And I've tried making a few beats on my phone, and it is surprising what you can do nowadays.
00:54:38: Like... It's really crazy.
00:54:40: Hell yeah man!
00:54:41: As long as you stay in creative it doesn't matter.
00:54:44: You can make beats with anything, y'know?
00:54:46: I got
00:54:47: little fucking thing right here.
00:54:50: What is
00:54:50: this?!
00:54:51: This the uh... Where does he call him?
00:54:55: Let me take that case off.
00:54:57: My homie sold me to his shit.
00:54:59: He's like, hey I got an extra one of these.
00:55:01: What is this?
00:55:02: Is it a drum machine?
00:55:04: It's like a little sampler!
00:55:06: Oh shit okay.
00:55:07: It
00:55:07: takes two little batteries.
00:55:10: Wow.
00:55:11: Hearing...I think its called the KO-II or KO-I.
00:55:17: That's crazy.
00:55:18: Or i think that what it was called.
00:55:21: Thats Crazy.
00:55:24: Yeah The Pocket Operator One Three Three There are so many different ways to make beats.

00:55:44: Just just your brain man.
00:55:47: I got a thousand percent bro.

00:55:59: He loves using this.
00:56:01: I've seen him use this all the fucking time and he kills it, but he uses all sorts of gear in it.
00:56:06: It's never the same piece of gear.
00:56:08: you'll see them post a beat with this one day.
00:56:10: We'll see I'm supposed to be with another little device And it's like what though?
