00:30:17: The rants like.
00:30:18: only only Flex could get away with that and his personality in everything has always been
00:30:24: special.".
00:30:25: The second person as DJ K-Slay.
00:30:28: RIP DJ K Slay.
00:30:30: uh phenomenal DJ And not only a phenomenal DJ.
00:30:34: you know when you think hip hop You'd take five elements.
00:30:37: dj k slay embody five elements.
00:30:40: He's known for being a DJ, but he was five elements at the time when Five Elements was literally like pillars.
00:30:48: Like literally just created in things and I remember Just Being A Kid and listening to his shows, The Drama King, Owl on Hot Nine Seven And everything.
00:30:59: Just being a kid like eleven o'clock at night Midnight.
00:31:02: just put my headphones on with the stereo speakers then just bumping in listen into him.
00:31:07: You know he was also one of the DJs that you would first go To when it's your radio runs In New York City.
00:31:13: so K-Slade Was very responsible for breaking A lot Of up and coming acts out the town.
00:31:20: So yeah those two definitely Yeah,
00:31:22: yeah.
00:31:23: Rest in peace.
00:31:23: the case there you know it was known even before DJing and the graffiti world.
00:31:27: You knew he's a super dope graffiti artist.
00:31:30: He killed with his mixtapes always put people on.
00:31:35: The only one that could pull up a move like this With the hundred rappers And two hundred rappers on same track.
00:31:43: Amazing for their culture.
00:31:44: man.
00:31:46: This guy Kay Slay is really missed man.
00:31:48: I'm like you.
00:31:49: when i was a kid, I used to bump his mix tapes.
00:31:51: You know he could be the mixtapes they did on his own also The one with pat poofs of course, you know
00:31:56: What?
00:31:57: Definitely A legend.
00:31:58: and the rest in peace to kay slay.
00:32:00: Man.
00:32:01: All right P-man all right P.
00:32:03: Yes sir And talk it about mixtape's and all that you K-Slade being One Of The Mixtape Kings men of all time You shall easy do your miss the miXTAPE format.
00:32:15: I do.
00:32:16: I miss the energy that came with a mixtape format, you know?
00:32:19: There was a time period where... You would discover your favorite acts from The Mixtape Circuit!
00:32:26: I remember being kid going to Canal Street in the city and having go find these mixtapes And then get those mixtaps out not just the famous rappers or people that were about to blow up, but then you would find on track twenty or track twenty-five random hole in the wall artists.
00:32:47: You've never heard of like yo who's THAT person?
00:32:51: I missed that kind of energy!
00:32:53: That mixtape energy, that smack DVD energy.
00:32:57: it was our social media before social media.
00:33:01: if you wanted be in the know...you had go through a mixtapes circuit.
00:33:05: so yeah kill, you know I do miss it.
00:33:09: It is very reminiscent and at the same time life changes discovery of artists change but um...it's just one those moments where we had to be there enough i was glad that they were there just witnessing..I wasn't a part of it ,but I was witnessing it as one of these things that drew me into making music even more.
00:33:34: Yeah, for sure.
00:33:34: I think it gave all this more freedom when it comes to their art.
00:33:39: like you can do whatever you want talk about Whatever You Won't use whatever beats the inspiration at no limit
00:33:49: hundred percent, and I mean it was raw.
00:33:52: It's authentic.
00:33:53: You know whoever had beef with whoever you found out on the smack DVD.
00:33:57: No, you learned about battle rap?
00:33:59: You learned about this records And you know The.
00:34:03: some of the biggest records that ended up making it on the radio Was first on the mixtape circuit and then they just leaked its way into the radio.
00:34:12: It wasn't a very special time.
00:34:14: It was a super special time and I remember some dudes, i can't remember the name exactly down south.
00:34:20: I know they sold like five hundred thousand copies of their mixtape.
00:34:24: They had a van
00:34:26: Yeah
00:34:26: yeah that's right in there with a number on it like platinum in streets.
00:34:34: Man its so dope when you think about it Like the power of mixtapes like printing your own shit And being able to go platinum in the street.
00:34:41: That is crazy man.
00:34:43: Oh, yeah.
00:34:44: I mean it was the earliest way to prove that you could sell records.
00:34:48: and then if you could sale through there Then there is no problem for you get into the label because once the labels realized That You were doing this independently or in this mixtape circuit It's nothing for them To give your budget.
00:35:01: And at a time when the budgets Were starting close-in A little bit too But it would feel considerable.
00:35:07: Can we expect maybe a mixtaple compilation from you?
00:35:10: Like with some unreleased stuff you know, freestyle from back in the days.
00:35:14: You know goldies like that?
00:35:17: Oh man I mean there's definitely...I've always thought about just putting little compilations of this old freestyles that have all put together.
00:35:25: what i tried to do.
00:35:26: when I tryed to do this last year you know um.. I put out a project called Five Out Secret Tape which is my first ever self-produced album and What I did with it was released.
00:35:36: four songs form The Tape on streaming platforms.
00:35:42: You had to purchase on my website and when you purchased it, It came in a cassette with QR code.
00:35:47: When you got the QR Code... ...you have access to Google Drive inside of Google Drive.
00:35:52: It was like a vault just unreleased music instrumentals that I produced And Music Video.
00:35:59: So i try to upload alot of content through there so people who have purchased the cassette is able to get access to that world.
00:36:09: And I'm gonna continue build into the world because The Secret Tape World will be like my little world of producing beats, rapping on the beat.
00:36:18: so people who like the beats and they want a rap on it They can purchase the cassettes and rap on them or if you wanna hear their music.
00:36:27: It's like my streaming platform mixed tape compilation.
00:36:32: I try to merge my worlds together.
00:36:35: Where do you get that creativity in terms of marketing?
00:36:41: Well, I just look at where the market is right now.
00:36:45: I think streaming kind like a new radio for independent artists and instead...I know people would wish they could make more money on streams.
00:36:58: My answer to that is, you know.
00:37:00: You throw your best record and your best single And put it out there for streaming platforms.
00:37:07: If they like the single then They'll come out and support The project by supporting It...you can buy a physical copy and get digital access.
00:37:17: Make the experience personal with the consumer.
00:37:22: Just try find ways For the consumer To support.
00:37:26: And who are some of the hip-hop entrepreneurs that inspired you to think this way?
00:37:33: Oh I mean, The first two that come to mind is like Jay Z and Fifty Cent too.
00:37:39: Like Fifty cent was one those guys we were talking about in the mixtape circuit.
00:37:43: right he's... To me if we're talking early two thousandths.
00:37:47: He was one of the pioneers on the mixtures circuit just putting music out putting shock value records out, getting a buzz and utilizing a lot of that as a tool to get recognition.
00:38:02: And creating bit-of-a-fan base obviously with Jay.
00:38:06: you know he has like uh business mindset A lot of the times in his come up.
00:38:11: particularly He was one of the first artists As far as independence goes That I feel carried himself In very business model corporate structure, you know?
00:38:25: For a guy that came in with him and his business partners.
00:38:28: They came in would have very business like corporate structure That I really admired.
00:38:34: And i don't have Business partners but...I am the business partner!
00:38:39: And I try to adopt A lot of what those gentlemen did In terms Of business moves and apply it To my movement and consistently build.
00:38:50: Yeah man It's dope that you're a man wearing different hats, like good with the marketing.
00:38:56: Good with the beats and rapping so really triple threat with it!
00:39:00: And if he had advice to give to upcoming rappers wanting follow same path being an entrepreneur producer or rapper what are some of mistakes they should avoid?
00:39:14: Well, I
00:39:17: personally think you know many people won't agree with me but i feel like today is the best time more than any other time.
00:39:25: if you're really passionate about making music this Is The Best Time to do it because you don't, You could save yourself the trouble and not spend as much money.
00:39:35: As maybe I did when i was first starting out Because...I mean..i'm sure you've been around for a long time as well!
00:39:42: You know how difficult It Was To Get Studio Equipment?
00:39:45: You Know How Difficult It Was to Shoot A Music Video Putting Together Music Marketing And Stuff Before.
00:39:53: The Game Is Even Digital Like That Today, I mean the game is super digital.
00:39:58: You don't really even need much.
00:40:02: Equipment is very affordable.
00:40:03: now you know?
00:40:04: You need a laptop or microphone...I would avoid paying for videographers!
00:40:14: I've been going on big campaign about that.
00:40:17: if i were them..i'd take my camera phone right off of my phone and shoot music video.
00:40:22: get one these apps to edit music videos And there you have a music video, because it's all about what the public feel.
00:40:30: They have to fill their music.
00:40:32: You know...you have be able do it fast.
00:40:35: Do with yourself and put something out that people are gonna touch before you start investing crazy amount of money Because which will start finding is like many businesses.. You'll put money up then realize within first year you didn't make much profit.
00:40:51: Then get frustrated for that.
00:40:54: So instead, you know to cut a lot of your costs off You should hone your craft not just in your skills of MCing or whatever.
00:41:04: We also have the hone-your-craft and marketing And you start slowly gradually find yourself doing those things if you're truly passionate.
00:41:12: I was always...I found myself truly passionate About it.
00:41:16: I was the first passionate about just rapping and then once i got into The business, I realized that oh
00:41:21: no now?
00:41:22: I gotta get Into
00:41:22: the marketing game.
00:41:24: Oh No how to go on To the producing game?
00:41:26: all know i gotta learn How to make merch.
00:41:28: oh no i gotta Learn how to shoot my own videos.
00:41:30: but guess what ever?
00:41:31: the whole market everybody caught up with each other because Now Everybody has to do It themselves at this point.
00:41:37: so yeah man Just uh Shoot your content.
00:41:40: be consistent And have fun, most importantly.
00:41:44: Have fun because if you're not having fun doing this... You might as well quit!
00:41:48: Might go find something and If your'e doin it for the money.
00:41:51: I can find several jobs that get a lot of money.
00:41:56: It could save all the trouble.
00:42:01: This is NOT THE BUSINESS FOR THAT.
00:42:04: I truly love creating.
00:42:06: I LOVE being innovative.
00:42:07: I LOVE making music.
00:42:08: I LOVE studying the music Studying in the past and seeing where we go.
00:42:13: And I love contributing into the space.
00:42:15: Yeah man, you say that all like You gotta be passionate about it then you got to be able take risk also understand how game works when your passion in individuals man especially now with modern technology can do everything people see if actually having fun and stuff is authentic.
00:42:37: because have seen a change.
00:42:39: even music videos Like some music videos that are made with phones, they're making a hundred millions of views and people don't even realize it.
00:42:47: You know?
00:42:48: you dont need to do everything crazy like back in the day as long as its authentic and the music is good And People can see That your had fun doing It.
00:42:58: I think thats all you need.
00:43:00: Oh absolutely!
00:43:02: From what i'm seeing Its funny that you mentioned something right.
00:43:06: The guys that are shooting with their phone, they're going viral.
00:43:10: They get millions of views.
00:43:11: meanwhile the guy's ironically using all professional cameras and getting best-of everything...they don't have as much engagement you know?
00:43:23: And this is exactly why I would suggest to younger artists shy away from them Not even strategically subconsciously.
00:43:32: do the same thing because they're on tiktok and They're seeing people blowing up for a whole lot less, you know.
00:43:38: So I don't have fun with it.
00:43:40: And yeah, and I just think when something is simple simplicity always works.
00:43:45: You know simplicity?
00:43:46: Always works.
00:43:47: The music has got to hit.
00:43:48: Yeah, I don' care how dope your video Is i don't care How conceptually cool It is or whatever.
00:43:54: if its not hitting No one cares everyone's gonna.
00:43:59: Kip, you're gonna look at your analytics.
00:44:01: You're going to look the retention rates and see oh man they only stuck around for ten seconds!
00:44:06: And this is why I say stick with your camera vote because if very least... ...you made something that had foam in it but didn't burn a hole on your pocket.
00:44:15: Yeah.. But i think its same thing even for movies or cinema.
00:44:20: like people are tired of seeing shit with CGI all over the place you know?
00:44:26: People want to see authentic stuff.
00:44:28: that era of showing out too much I think it's.
00:44:31: we're over with it.
00:44:32: you know
00:44:34: oh a hundred percent and i mean you being from France.
00:44:36: You guys are innovators when with films.
00:44:38: so, real authenticity.
00:44:43: That's what it is all about, I mean we're in an era where you talk about movies and CGI superhero movies every season.
00:44:50: that no disrespect to all my superhero fans but after a while kind of get tired do want hear and feel or see a real story?
00:45:00: And funny you mentioned films...I said this with one of my peers who complained music videos are at the bottom the barrel when it comes to actually shooting something.
00:45:14: I mean a music video on its basic level is two, three locations with B-roll sequenced in between.
00:45:20: that's a music.
00:45:22: If you think this is hard, try shooting a film.
00:45:25: Talking about films?
00:45:26: Try shooting a book!
00:45:27: Try shooting an independent film with no crazy budget.
00:45:30: Even that's a lot of money and it takes a lot concentration And discipline.
00:45:37: A lot people involved.
00:45:38: The music video on its basic level Subjects and somebody holding the camera.
00:45:45: After that post.
00:45:46: edit
00:45:48: Pretty
00:45:48: simple pretty straight forward.
00:45:50: Yeah, you just put the video with the song in the background and that's it.
00:45:55: When your doing movies man this hundreds of takes You know we gotta have sound effects like if you slam a door or you got to put that effect there.
00:46:05: It works man!
00:46:08: You need an editor That is gonna sit down.
00:46:10: take your footages Put them together nicely.
00:46:13: You need audio.
00:46:14: You need someone with boom mic To be able pick up this audio because they camera because the camera's not gonna be able to pick it up.
00:46:21: And then of course there is a budget, you have pay all these people.
00:46:26: You need someone who will write this story whoever that person is.
00:46:29: It's a lot man!
00:46:30: So glad!
00:46:32: It was a lot work man shout out to all film makers and artists making dope heart anyways.
00:46:39: And what were your biggest challenges?
00:46:41: The biggest challenge, man.
00:46:42: I had a couple of
00:46:46: challenges to face but the biggest Challenge that i think That i have to face was obviously i came into the game you know and in it And the field Of entertainment is very much like race-based right?
00:47:02: Let's not cut around beat Around the bush then walking Into the space of hip hop being the fact I'm of Middle Eastern heritage and like descent, right?
00:47:13: There's always this you know unusual suspect factor when i was first starting out.
00:47:18: Like who is this guy?
00:47:20: what is he about?
00:47:21: And um sometimes you have to play along with certain narratives To be able to get some shine Get some light.
00:47:30: so You Know When I Was First Starting Out You know, I used to always present myself.
00:47:34: One of my first marketing tactics was always you know yo what up?
00:47:38: I'm Shia Lizzie the king in the Middle East.
00:47:40: like that's how i used to Always Present Myself To People because I knew when I would say something Like That it Would Already Like you Know Here's A perk Up Like King Of Middle East.
00:47:51: What Yo?
00:47:52: You Better dumb nice saying something like that.
00:47:55: so then they will hear me rap and it would be okay.
00:47:58: And slowly, the identity started to build more into.
00:48:01: oh yeah!
00:48:02: That's The Middle Eastern guy who can rap really good.
00:48:06: but with that there is a trade off because as I grew in my artistry you didn't want just Guy, you want to just be the artist.
00:48:20: I wanna be the artists because i wanna able show that I can stand with best of them You know?
00:48:26: So That became my later fight as we treaded on into my career and think uh...I think I've done a really good job at being able to Stand alone in my artistry And Being known first and foremost As an Artist.
00:48:42: Not so much like heritage or background.
00:48:45: That's always gonna be a part of me, but that's not something I wanna just put at the forefront.
00:48:51: I want you to hear music and my experience here in life And being able to relate with
00:48:57: it.
00:48:57: I think people when their content is dope they don't care about where your from or what everything you have.
00:49:05: They just focus on something else.
00:49:09: You kept it true for yourself man Being authentic, making the music that you like.
00:49:14: You don't want to do music for others.
00:49:16: we can feel it's something... ...that is laid-to in your lyrics.
00:49:20: Shit is authentic!
00:49:22: So just saying yourself and thats how you keep a solid fan base.
00:49:26: I think people can see when you're real guy especially in hip hop man
00:49:31: Shaw.
00:49:33: And now, we talked about a lot of things.
00:49:35: Tell me what you got going on?
00:49:37: I know that your just dropped the song with Planet Asia and been playing it in the mixtape addict shop but tell us all the stuff you've got going bro.
00:49:45: Oh first and foremost i want to thank for playing this record.
00:49:47: It means alot to me.
00:49:50: I got the record Hung Jewelery.
00:49:51: Its not my record its Planet Asia's Record and um...I was grateful even being invited On the record with planet.
00:49:59: he is like triple OG In The Game Legendary underground rapper and just the fact to have somebody like that on your side And just holding it down for you and giving you an opportunity in multiple opportunities.
00:50:13: I should say It feels great.
00:50:15: You know, i'm saying uh That that I shot them by the way sidebar?
00:50:19: I shot a music video for that
00:50:21: record.
00:50:22: Nice
00:50:23: And you know, it's done really good numbers and has gotten great engagements.
00:50:27: Um, I'm happy to be part of it.
00:50:30: I was also invited to be on my man DJ Infamous Amadeus of the Punchline Academy.
00:50:36: iIwas able To Be On His Single with Tom LG.
00:50:40: The song is called Halal and it's done really well as Well, I Thought It Was A Really Dope Record.
00:50:48: And Then This Friday I Just Dropped My New Album Fifth Chamber Philosophy Which Is Out Now On All Streaming Platforms.
00:50:55: I got a single with Planet Asia on my project as well, called The Boy Who Solved the Universe.
00:51:01: Very dope record!
00:51:02: Um...I'm appreciative of all support that i've gotten for it and uh..got a lot great feedback.
00:51:08: so far It's only been like two three days but alot people are giving me great feedback for it And we're gonna continue to come.
00:51:15: hit you out more visuals & stuff.
00:51:16: I have more visuals than I shot that.
00:51:18: im about putout throughout rest of week and Im going be shooting more
00:51:22: Dope Dope.
00:51:23: So I forgot about that, so you make beats.
00:51:25: You rap!
00:51:26: I bet your engineer too...you shoot your own videos.
00:51:30: It's not even triple threat no more bro.
00:51:34: Yeah man yeah i mean listen to.
00:51:36: you got two..I feel like im the only one who does it but i'm really broadcasting it for the masses.
00:51:45: because see that this is what independent really looks like, you know?
00:51:51: Because there's a lot of dudes they scream independent but the reality They gotta deal behind closed doors.
00:51:58: They got secret marketing companies dropping bags.
00:52:01: I mean, you know i'm privy to this information because i've been in the business long enough To Know What's what?
00:52:07: I don't have Secret Marketing Companies Dropping Bags for me!
00:52:10: I'd love to Have that
00:52:11: but I Don't!
00:52:12: Right?!
00:52:13: Like I'm not my Green Velody shout out to The folks That do have it But I dont' have that...but..what Im showcasing is like-I Love to Do This and This Is What Real Independence Looks Like.
00:52:26: You have to do a lot of it on your own.
00:52:28: And if you don't want to, then you gotta pay somebody.
00:52:31: and I feel like for myself as long that i've been doing this... ...I understood the three-sixty process of what It takes To create music and put it out right?
00:52:44: Like I worked at recording studios.
00:52:46: That's how I learned How to engineer.
00:52:48: When you learn how to engineer You subconsciously teach yourself how to produce and make beats simultaneous.
00:52:55: It works together, you know?
00:52:56: And then of course I came into the game rapping.
00:52:59: that was natural.
00:52:59: I've been rapping since iIwas a little kid.
00:53:02: so The engineering aspect was just working out studios and learning how to produce Then Working on actual music videos working behind-the-scenes working with directors Learning the process of how shooting music videos work.
00:53:18: paying for my own Music videos in learning about our process worked till eventually was like okay now I'm gonna get my own camera and then i dedicated a whole year to just shooting my own visuals, teaching myself how to edit the art of editing.
00:53:35: And people think it's really hard.
00:53:37: but if you're intellectually curious about this process It's not gonna be difficult because the access to information now is fifty-fifty.
00:53:49: You know, you wanna learn how make beats like... Can't float.
00:53:55: and you know, You can go on Google.
00:53:57: You could go on google And literally type it in!
00:53:59: You can Go on YouTube and type In how to make beats like blah blah blah And then they will Literally go through a whole process with you On How To Do It y'know?
00:54:08: Yep I've just been such A fan.
00:54:10: also Like i'm an audio geek too Like im an audio nerd Like i love equipment.
00:54:15: I Love playing with Equipment.
00:54:17: And you know, some of my good peers and friends also that I make music with are producers.
00:54:23: So i've always had the luxury Of being able to play beats for them... ...and then critiquing it giving me feedback.. ..and then I was able learn a lot from their process.... ....And be able to hone my craft at it ultimately.
00:54:38: Yup!
00:54:39: But its not everybody who has this mindset The household mentality that you have because alot people They're gonna be lazy, you know?
00:54:47: But y'all want to feel creative and learn about new things.
00:54:51: So I think everything is linked.
00:54:53: You've been an engineer so that gives a link for production.
00:54:57: And then when we do production We can go into video edition because if u look at it the software is pretty much the same.
00:55:05: It's like your playing instead of just audio its video with the audio and... ...you make it work
00:55:13: Absolutely!
00:55:14: and the same thing i always say like tracking out vocals is very similar to shooting a music video.
00:55:22: right because I always say it's ninety nine percent performance one-percent mic.
00:55:26: so if your performance isn't good on the record, It doesn't matter what you throw in post production.
00:55:36: performance is going to sound shittier with the EQs turned up on it too, right?
00:55:41: And the same thing goes for a music video.
00:55:44: You need a location that embodies whatever you're feeling and then you need good performance.
00:55:48: because if you have those two after that... The post-edit is just gonna be beautiful!
00:55:53: It's only gonna enhance what ever it is.
00:55:56: So yeah I mean..you realize when go into this stuff they are all interconnected in way.
00:56:03: Yup, it's making heart man.
00:56:04: You know its all about what you have in your head before having all the gear and... I've seen some dudes at super expensive studios And they make me listen to beats or tracks that were made when shit was wack.
00:56:16: so you know?
00:56:18: Yeah man!
00:56:19: Listen and as funny we mentioned because i heard people make gold literally gold with the most simplest stuff that you would have never imagined.
00:56:32: And then, like he said I've heard people with the most expensive equipment and they don't know how to use the equipment... ...and it sounds like trash!
00:56:40: You know what
00:56:41: i mean?
00:56:42: But yeah.. Whatever it is you purchase whatever Equipment you Have you have to Know How To Utilize It and get Maximized Because if not your gonna end up selling it.
00:56:51: Yup, yup That makes me think of that madly video I Don't know.
00:56:54: If you Heard about this one She's Seen on YouTube Back In The Days.
00:56:57: He had a little sampler.
00:56:59: He was in Brazil, he got a vinyl and just sample that little ass sampler.
00:57:06: And he made some crazy shit!
00:57:07: That's the video from maybe at least fifteen years ago.
00:57:11: So this shows you how greatness is not about all of your material.
00:57:16: It's also about watching your head The same guy madly.
00:57:18: we had a Grammy award making beats on an iPad.
00:57:24: Yeah, like I
00:57:25: said it just goes down to technique and knowing your equipment.
