00:34:08: Let's get it, man.

00:34:21: Well welcome to the Mixed Aepatic radio show.

00:34:33: I'm your host King Flo all the way in

00:34:35: France

00:34:36: and today my special guest is none other than Boston

00:34:39: super producer

00:34:41: The archetype in a building.

00:34:42: how are you?

00:34:43: Man?

00:34:44: What's up, man?

00:34:45: Thank You for having me appreciate.

00:34:47: I have you on there.

00:34:48: when I heard the bangers, you know say like made my speakers blow my mind so I had to have you own their

00:34:55: Appreciate that man.

00:34:56: I appreciate they're happy to be here

00:34:58: No doubt.

00:34:58: man, well you know the tradition of the mixtape addict show.

00:35:01: I have to ask you that's a tradition out there who is your all time favorite DJ?

00:35:07: Those you know, I know it's sort of a no.

00:35:10: It's probably like the worst answer But it's hard.

00:35:12: It's hard for me to narrow it down because there are so many greats.

00:35:15: obviously right and A lot of my favorite DJ is also really great producers.

00:35:19: You know fantastic producers.

00:35:22: So its kind of hard Like sorta...I feel like i can't separate one from other Because I liked them as producers As well.

00:35:31: but I will say Two Of The Best Nights I've ever had out was when Questlove was DJing, and I know that's not like the most standard answer because he seen us so many other things before being a DJ.

00:35:49: but i tell you man.

00:35:50: He put on just a clinic of The Best.

00:35:55: it musically went all over the place.

00:35:57: there were no rules to it...he played old stuff new stuff every genre like, and he just had such a feel for how the audience was feeling in The Club that night.

00:36:08: It's just cool man.

00:36:09: it was unlike any other DJ said I'd ever

00:36:13: really heard both

00:36:14: times when i heard of him so...I have to say hes probably up there because he made such an unique experience out.

00:36:20: Nice,

00:36:22: that's dope man.

00:36:23: That's where you know.

00:36:24: a real DJ is the guy they can actually play not only hip-hop but he can play reggae and jazz.

00:36:31: Oh yeah dude!

00:36:32: He threw everything in there.

00:36:33: it was crazy like... You never knew what would come next or what era I was coming from But..but....he also found a way to draw a line through everything Like.

00:36:43: he made sense because either of them Either the theme of like, a topic or song.

00:36:49: Or you know... The concept and whatever it might be There was always some thread that carried this whole thing.

00:36:54: I mean he's just musical genius in general.

00:36:58: So its sorta no surprise that he is also great

00:37:02: DJ.

00:37:02: He knows

00:37:03: his knowledge

00:37:05: of music.

00:37:05: so crazy Yeah!

00:37:06: He's man-of-culture!

00:37:07: He knows these things.

00:37:10: It's super dope.

00:37:11: actually when the DJ can bring you, it is kind of like watching a movie.

00:37:15: You know what I'm saying?

00:37:16: A musical movie takes you into special ambience using sometimes similar bass line

00:37:23: in a song.

00:37:24: That's what that means yeah.

00:37:25: Crazy man shout out to Questlove!

00:37:27: Thats'a great answer for me.

00:37:28: nobody ever say quest love and its super dope man.

00:37:31: Yeah yeah thats what's up.

00:37:33: Shoutout to QuestLove.

00:37:35: You know I have another mixtape had a question for you man.

00:37:38: Yeah, i think i know the answer to this.

00:37:40: Do you miss?

00:37:41: The mixtape format?

00:37:43: oh yeah of course man.

00:37:44: i mean i think the mixtate format was great because It it Was kind of like it allowed artists To just have freedom.

00:37:51: you don't i mean they.

00:37:52: it's Like you got stuff from them that uh Wasn't concerned?

00:37:56: you Know where labels weren't necessarily as hands-on involved in terms Of what was coming out.

00:38:02: there wasn't dislike constant desire or need to make a hit.

00:38:06: You know, that wasn't like as much... That was it at play.

00:38:09: so you kind of liked- That's where you got some the best verses from people ever because they were just going off and there was no sort of.

00:38:18: does this fit into the record?

00:38:20: It is just ultimate freedom for an artist be an artist.

00:38:24: I think that format So allowed you know, of how sort-of like social media is kind of changing things and shifting it a little bit.

00:38:41: There's some of that freedom as coming back a little because I think with... You're seeing a big rise again in recent years of like freestyles becoming going viral and then those thing just getting released on people not being concerned about where stuff lives.

00:38:59: And so I think we're starting to get a little bit of that freedom back, but the mixtape era was great for that.

00:39:04: It's just like getting those exclusive cuts you'd hear nowhere else and it was great!

00:39:09: You know what I mean?

00:39:11: There were also...it was cool because The Curation was left to DJs as opposed to label execs and executive producers and ANRs and all that..you got the taste you know, but DJ really influenced the results.

00:39:30: And so seeing this series of mixtapes by any one DJ their whole series was like... You could become a fan of both music that is on it as well as the DJ and the series they were running.

00:39:44: So It's great era!

00:39:46: You know what I mean?

00:39:47: Yeah man Like you said its just freedom.

00:39:50: The magic word right there is freedom.

00:39:52: You know the mixtape will be pushing boundaries for creativity

00:39:57: Yup.

00:39:58: And it was letting art just be art, you know what I mean?

00:40:01: Without expectation of performance and like how well is the track gonna do... Is he going to chart or are we all these things...?

00:40:08: All that kind off-the-table do dope stuff, you know what I mean?

00:40:12: It doesn't matter how it happens.

00:40:15: It's cool!

00:40:18: We had many type of DJs too.

00:40:20: we have guys like DJ Clue that had the exclusive stuff.

00:40:24: i remember P Cutter.

00:40:25: he has street walls mixtape with just the diss tracks for example.

00:40:31: Mick Boogie was doing blends so every type of djs but they always came up good concepts.

00:40:38: Yeah, that's what I mean.

00:40:41: But you know...I think as time moves on and things continue to shift DJs and curators are always going be creatives.

00:40:51: They'll find a way to push it.

00:40:54: I don't think we've seen the end of that kind of creativity.

00:40:58: It's just going to look a little different than it did then,

00:41:00: you know?

00:41:01: Yeah for sure!

00:41:01: The format is gonna be different but... I talked to EvilD from Beat Miners yesterday with an interview and he told me

00:41:08: We still

00:41:08: do that, the mixtape spirit all day But on different platforms.

00:41:14: He uses Twitch for example MixCloud All that

00:41:18: Absolutely.

00:41:19: So its still there.

00:41:20: You know what i mean.

00:41:22: Everything lived in one format before.

00:41:25: It was kind of like mixtape CDs, you know what I mean?

00:41:27: That's kinda it!

00:41:28: And then obviously there is the Dat Piff era and all that but now its just a little more dispersed into various different platforms Like whoever uses Mixed Clouds and stuff which are obviously huge.

00:41:42: So

00:41:44: some DJs like me we're taking the mixtapes on the radio

00:41:49: Which i think is super cool.

00:41:51: Yeah, because we had problems with like you said the label executives and all that.

00:41:55: We have problems with those guys Because they were not happy about to copyright things.

00:41:59: So we had to find a different format And bring that spirit back.

00:42:04: You know I use radio to do That man.

00:42:06: so...

00:42:06: I think it's great!

00:42:07: I mean thats awesome

00:42:09: Like what we say in French i have carte blanche You can't do whatever I want.

00:42:12: Yeah

00:42:13: yeah

00:42:14: yeah!

00:42:14: It is great, its great!

00:42:16: To you as a fan of music What makes a great mixtape?

00:42:20: Like, what do you want to hear when you press play on the mixtapes.

00:42:25: Well I think for me it was always...I mean that's different from everybody but i think for ME it WAS the exclusives.

00:42:30: You know what I mean like..i remember especially coming up during the era of Eminem When he put out everything all the time.

00:42:39: He was such a great mix tape content guy because there was diss tracks, you know.

00:42:46: There were all kinds of crazy exclusives that he would drop and they always like... You know?

00:42:52: All the white label stuff that he's putting out is arguably better than some album stuff.

00:42:57: so it's like for me.

00:42:59: I've been seeking out exclusive because i wanted to hear the crazy cuts weren't on records.

00:43:07: And then it was also about hearing, like getting to hear new production from great producers that you're just starving.

00:43:15: Because I mean at the time we have to remember people weren't releasing music as they are now.

00:43:22: People were putting out five albums a year.

00:43:24: Now there's no shortage of music.

00:43:27: We had a lot of music coming But back then you know, an M&M album was coming out like at best maybe once a year.

00:43:36: Like at best and often there were couple years in between.

00:43:39: so it's kind of like... You had these large gaps but no social media.

00:43:43: So its not like your hearing anything in-between or something.. You got the album then waiting for next thing.

00:43:51: And so the mixtapes filled that gap, you know what I mean?

00:43:53: It gave us those like oh man did you hear this exclusive on this.

00:43:57: You know when someone's those mixtape or whatever.

00:43:58: So for me That was always a thing.

00:44:00: it's like i got to hear both production and dope verses in those Exclusive pieces.

00:44:06: that's what all of us are seeking out.

00:44:08: sometimes The mixta were better than their albums.

00:44:11: yeah absolutely Absolutely.

00:44:14: For that same because of that same freedom we were talking about he was Like your letting an artist just do What they feel like doing without sort of concerns about how things are going to perform or any that kind stuff, you know?

00:44:24: I mean it just was like do an art for arts sake.

00:44:28: Yeah even in terms of song structures if your album is a major label we have to respect two or three verses hooks whatever and If u do a mixtape u can do a song thats minute and thirty seconds long and fuck it.

00:44:42: its what it is man!

00:44:44: Absolutely, that's what it was.

00:44:45: I know its great!

00:44:46: It is such freedom.

00:44:47: Yep yep and can we expect maybe like a mix table compilation from you the archetype to show people all of your work for those years?

00:44:55: You

00:44:55: know i have never thought about this.

00:44:58: Its not a terrible idea...I put together my playlist on Spotify but if mixed takes kind of cool ideas..i've never really thought of that because im don't see myself as DJ.

00:45:09: so thats why i didnt come as an idea, but that is something I should explore and see if i can find somebody who wants to put some like that together.

00:45:21: Well shit you're talking to the guy right there.

00:45:23: let's do it man!

00:45:25: Word

00:45:26: up yeah... You know use some unreleased tracks some cuts drop some skits interludes in there.

00:45:33: make this shit sound dope man!

00:45:35: Dope dope dope

00:45:37: that deal.

00:45:37: Yeah, man.

00:45:38: Let's go back in time because you produced for a lot of big names and all that.

00:45:43: but let's go Back In Time when You Were Younger like what made you want to start the career?

00:45:47: And become a music producer.

00:45:50: yeah I don't know What it was.

00:45:54: well i guess I guess that's sort of dumb.

00:45:57: Music was always there, like i was always playing music.

00:46:00: since as early Asi can remember my parents really pushed music on me in a big way.

00:46:04: they Always made sure their instruments and the house...I Was very fortunate.

00:46:07: That Way it was Like They Believed In The Power Of Music.

00:46:10: so So I was always There.

00:46:11: My Dad Played Piano A Little bit..My Mom Didn't play Anything But She Totally Supported It And Still Does!

00:46:18: And Um....So I was Always Playing Music And I Had A little Band In Middle School you know, as a lot of us do with the couple friends.

00:46:28: And I remember...I distinctly remember going into the recording studio.

00:46:33: we were gonna record a demo like three song demos so that we could try to get more gigs and I thought this was like, oh my god we are in the studio.

00:46:43: This is the most incredible experience.

00:46:45: looking back i was definitely in a guy's kitchen.

00:46:48: you know what i mean?

00:46:49: It wasn't a recording studio it was home studio but it wasn't completely professional and there were just really great guys who had some recording gear offered to help us out But he was at his house.

00:47:02: But uh, but that put a bug in me.

00:47:05: I remember coming out of that.

00:47:06: being like this was the coolest thing i've ever done Like recording was awesome.

00:47:11: So that got me into though.

00:47:12: That kind of planted the seed for my whole recording Obsession.

00:47:16: you know what?

00:47:16: I mean, I got a little eightrap on my own and started to record things On my own

00:47:20: And then

00:47:21: um Uh yeah You know Then high school came and the band kind of split up because we all went our different ways or whatever And I didn't really have anyone to make music with.

00:47:31: so i was kind of just using this eight track and making a lot Of my own music over and over again, you know.

00:47:36: I fell in love With hip-hop during During high school?

00:47:40: So i was later To the to it.

00:47:42: than then that A lot of folks um and uh I started Just kind of Making beats for fun You Know and It Was Just like.

00:47:49: This Is Just Kind of Like A cool Way to Make Music on My Own.

00:47:53: it's like I Really Found a Lot of joy In it.

00:47:58: Then someone, you know a local emcee was like hey can I rap on this?

00:48:03: Which never even occurred to me.

00:48:04: Like that it would be like made A real song like that wasn't really like.

00:48:08: i couldn't believe It blew my mind and so we did That.

00:48:11: And uh and it came out great at all of them.

00:48:13: from then On I was like okay I'm completely addicted To doing This You Know.

00:48:17: So I Was At The Time I was Working Like Painting Jobs and Instruction Work and Things like that.

00:48:22: but You Know There's All Like Summer Job Kind Of things that you know in High School.

00:48:26: But All the while I was learning how to just teach myself how to produce and get better at it.

00:48:32: And when there came time, you know look in college...I actually had a college advisor who's like You could go into school for recording.

00:48:40: It never even occurred me that this is an option.

00:48:44: My parents fortunately were like Yeah we can support them You know, I went ahead and did that.

00:48:49: And then it was no.

00:48:50: looking back the second night i knew That that Was a valid career path you Know both in The world as well As you know In the eyes of my parents?

00:48:59: Mm-hmm!

00:48:59: You know uh...and..I had their blessing.

00:49:01: I mean I probably would have done It even if I didn't Have Their Blessing but made it easier to make it Easier To know they were like okay with it.

00:49:09: So yeah I just went Ahead and Did it.

00:49:11: you know what I mean from.

00:49:12: Then there's No Looking Back.

00:49:13: at that point I was Just full steam ahead and you know I've never seen.

00:49:17: I couldn't really imagine doing much else, you know.

00:49:20: It's like...I remember Vinny Paz posted a little something few years back.

00:49:26: he said man in music if you could imagine doing anything but music You should do that.

00:49:35: Yeah, I agree with that.

00:49:36: But if you can't imagine doing anything else but music then you're stuck here with the rest of us.

00:49:42: You know what I mean?

00:49:44: Like that resonated so hard because i was like yeah That's it!

00:49:47: I really cant' imagine what else would do.

00:49:50: So

00:49:51: just be a hundred percent in it man Just put all your force or mind to it...

00:49:56: Yeah..I had made this work And as a producer, it's an up and down road.

00:50:04: It's not easy.

00:50:04: obviously the industry has changed a lot over the decades.

00:50:07: you know what I mean?

00:50:07: So your sort of like have to amend and switch it up with.

00:50:11: but The recording side is always helped me stay in music because i record and mix a tonne people after alot work.

00:50:19: so when production works maybe slower or having a harder... In adjustment phase then the recording work carries through.

00:50:29: They kind of go hand-in-hand, you know.

00:50:31: That's what helps.

00:50:33: help me stay

00:50:34: in it.

00:50:34: Yeah You gotta be smart with it to know that just right at the end of today we all got a pay bill.

00:50:39: so yeah Exactly your men wearing many hats sometimes

00:50:42: man.

00:50:43: Yep exactly

00:50:44: But you've got to have that that also mentality that entrepreneur mindset.

00:50:48: It's not everybody that actually has there because you can't be oh, yeah A great producer like super talented.

00:50:53: but if you don't put your mind too easy and don't have that hustle?

00:50:58: It's over

00:50:59: Yeah, a hundred percent.

00:51:02: And it's also not an easy road.

00:51:03: so if you don't have that mentality and never say die kind of attitude then... It takes a long time to get into place where at all sustainable.

00:51:20: And even then, it's a fragile state.

00:51:22: You know what I mean?

00:51:23: It's not like you're just good the second you get there Not on easy road is like okay now we gotta keep work real hard to keep in here.

00:51:31: What has been your

00:51:34: biggest challenge for me probably was getting over my own Like were my own creative challenges.

00:51:42: It's like expectations of my own personal expectations.

00:51:47: Of where I should be at what point in my career, you know?

00:51:50: I had set all these goals and when i'm this age or that age... ...I should be X Y and Z. This is what I should have under my belt You know?

00:51:58: And reaching those milestones and realizing okay.. I haven't accomplished what I said I wanted to accomplish by this point.

00:52:10: Try not try to come to terms with and understand that like there's no rhyme or reason for any of this.

00:52:16: There is not rules, just because the person over here did it in a time line doesn't mean its how works for me.

00:52:23: you know what I mean?

00:52:23: And trying stop comparing my own personal journey on my path against somebody else...and really coming into terms My career being whatever it turns out to be, you know my path and my journey.

00:52:39: Being Whatever It Is And Just Trying To Do The Best Work I Can All The Time In That You Know And That's Something I'm Still Working On Daily.

00:52:48: You Don't Have Some Days.

00:52:50: I Wake Up And I'm Like Man.

00:52:52: How Was This Not Happening?

00:52:53: You Know How Did I Accomplish That?

00:52:56: Yet Or Whatever?

00:52:57: I've gotten better at just kind of like quieting that voice when it pops up.

00:53:02: Yeah,

00:53:03: let it flow.

00:53:04: you know every human being each human is unique.

00:53:07: so we have yeah Every person has a unique all career.

00:53:10: You know unique path for unique lane.

00:53:12: So he's got to go with it.

00:53:14: Let It Flow man

00:53:15: And the more you let him flow.

00:53:17: nine times out of ten That always been.

00:53:19: when this stuff happens When you start to forget about where you think what should be, and just start doing the stuff that YOU ARE doing.

00:53:29: And stop thinking about it.

00:53:31: Often times when this stuff comes, THAT'S when it starts to come!

00:53:35: Just trusting if you do good work... It'll come to

00:53:40: ya!

00:53:41: After all those years working in a music industry producing for big names like What type of advice would you give maybe to upcoming producers or listening to us right

00:53:51: now?

00:53:53: Well, yeah I think just that like try to you know.

00:53:55: Like there's that saying comparison is the thief of joy and it Is really true.

00:54:00: It's like just try not To compare yourself against anyone else who was one Of The things That i had to learn to overcome.

00:54:06: Overcome And Really Not.

00:54:07: You Know Learned.

00:54:08: Do Not do

00:54:09: um and uh

00:54:11: and like i said as well if you can imagine doing anything but this probably Should Think About Doing Because its also an ill-advised career right?

00:54:21: Any other, there's trying to think of almost any other career that you have put as much time and energy in money.

00:54:28: And heart into the return of investment.

00:54:33: The ROI would be a whole lot higher than it can be here right like from just dollars-and-cents perspective Right?

00:54:40: Like is a career path.

00:54:42: if I put all my time and you know, and effort and heart that I have put in here into being an investment banker or real estate agent.

00:54:53: I would probably have a ton of money and be living very comfortably...

00:54:58: ...in the way

00:55:01: that currently do not.

00:55:04: so it's- You gotta love.

00:55:07: it is my whole point like if you don't really love It's gonna take a lot more from you than it is going to give back, so if you don't love If you love it, It doesn't matter because every day I wake up and i'm like ready to make music.

00:55:21: You know what I mean?

00:55:22: And so the fact that I get to do this in some capacity everyday is a true blessing!

00:55:27: For me...I try to keep that insight at all times Like..I get to be able to do whatever I want to do everyday To some degree.

00:55:34: That's really rewarding.

00:55:39: Every time you have doubts about yourself or something like that I think we should just Think about the past and think of all the greatness that you've accomplished before.

00:55:47: That might put your back

00:55:49: on the road.

00:55:50: Yeah, I have always had to look at it saying listen man what would my high school self want me do this?

00:55:56: When i was just dreaming if I saw where am at now...I'd say wow!

00:56:02: I did

00:56:03: it!!

00:56:03: I made

00:56:03: it!!!

00:56:04: You know what I

00:56:04: mean??

00:56:05: Of course I still dream of higher goals but but just try to keep in sight that like the kid I was when i first started this would look at where I'm now and be like dude you did what I wanted.

00:56:19: You did the thing I always hoping do.

00:56:22: Yup, yup.

00:56:23: You know it's super important.

00:56:24: yeah man It is man so that helps you to keep going you know?
