00:27:38: Like Ranjee back in the day and even old mixtape DJs where people who introduced me to music...I think that first time i heard Eminem was on a Ranjie tape you know what im saying?

00:27:48: So I definitely got love from Marley Maul for all of the pioneers whose started doing this thing.

00:27:52: Of course man, shout out to all the DJs.

00:27:54: Shoutout to all of the mixtape DJ's, club DJ' s whatever you know All the guys that make music live in this modern days and even back any day.

00:28:04: But some guy like Tony Toca Kid Capri Even Evil D they're still doing it Still bringing their mixtapes spirit with the modern technology And its super dope to see them be able to leave through those days.

00:28:21: Agreed, and I was a DJ for awhile.

00:28:30: To be a graph writer and give it like six out of ten... I would say as DJ's probably more an eight outta ten You know?

00:28:38: DJing is my next best thing besides rapping And something i still love playing and curating music for people.

00:28:50: You're the person who sets the vibe Being the narrator throughout the whole of a composition and in a presentation.

00:29:05: I recently watched an interview by Jeff Mills in The House DJ legendary house DJ And he say that being a DJ helped him in his life to make decisions.

00:29:21: To make people remember about those days whatever no creative scenario when you're doing a DJ set so they help him Mentally to be able to you know Make decisions in his life is crazy and its true It's true when he think about it.

00:29:44: Do you miss the mixtap format?

00:29:48: I think that... ...I miss the radio and listening to new music break on the radio.. ..I miss getting the mixtapes And you know again having that discovery Having a place where you could go and hear your favorite artists along New Artists Hearing people juggle beats and hearing people actually come up with creative ways To do their own blends and remixes.

00:30:14: not to mention the fact like a lot of these mix tapes back in day had exclusive freestyles that you couldn't hear anywhere else, right?

00:30:20: And so I think we were spoiled.

00:30:23: We came from an era where there was a bounty, plentiful amount of DJs doing this stuff and i definitely miss the mixtape era...I missed cassettes!

00:30:33: You know, when we actually rockin' on cassettes If you were going to fast forward through a song, You're gonna sit there in silence for A minute thirty.

00:30:48: For period of time where your not hearing any music and so There are alot times when I would power thru Even if i didn't initially like the song Like listen it because I'd rather hear a song Than Silence or have to worry about Fast Forwarding Or whatever.

00:31:02: And then this crazy thing happened which is Maybe on listen number five or the list of numbers six, I'd be like you know what?

00:31:08: Actually actually kind of liked this.

00:31:09: I'm gonna fuck with this.

00:31:10: This is actually pretty good and i wouldn't have got to that if it wouldn't Have happened on the mixtape I would just missed out on something.

00:31:17: A lot of times people when things are really complex And new they don't get at The first time They hear It takes repetition.

00:31:23: You Know What I mean.

00:31:24: so Like.

00:31:25: I think that a lot of these kids are missing out on it nowadays.

00:31:28: They don't get the opportunity to have a taste maker and somebody who knows about music introduce something new for them, they might actually need some time before they can appreciate this.

00:31:40: The mixtapes again... It was like party in your pocket you know?

00:31:44: You literally could put that mixtape into.

00:31:46: it would get rockin' for an hour!

00:31:52: Even if you didn't have your own DJ in-house, You could still get that proximity and the proximation of what a party would sound like.

00:31:59: And I think it's beautiful thing... Now days we had to mix DJs.

00:32:05: They're not putting them on tapes they just put their mixes together!

00:32:08: And i'm still huge listener.. I mean listen to this show now because We are talking today but Because you got great taste music and often times again It gives me same feeling as when i pop into Ron G tape.

00:32:24: I'm trying to bring that mixtape spirit back and like you said, few minutes ago The mixtape is a platform for people to hear stuff that they know but also stuff that don't know and it might fail the love with, you know what I'm saying?

00:33:35: and how does the DJ build a Again a cohesion between the song so that i don't feel Like startled or jostled when I go with the transition happen?

00:33:47: So being able to think about building blocks of putting them in way It's harmonious and it harmonizes the music is one thing.

00:33:58: I still pay attention to the skills, you know.

00:34:00: like how do they juggle?

00:34:01: Do they change the tempo a little bit?

00:34:06: Do something that makes the track... How good are they at finding that bar?

00:34:12: because DJs as musicians themselves The way certain bars stand out to them.

00:34:19: DJ will find a bar bring back that like again, if they pick the right bar.

00:34:25: That makes that whole thing much more impactful and it really drives home a medium behind song And you can actually sometimes you might miss A lyric from a rapper but If DJ brings her back and emphasizes You may catch at time as result of this.

00:34:38: so how much did They help me find things within The verse I didn't hear myself?

00:34:44: Then i think.

00:34:44: other thing is How broad Is their You know, how broad is their taste?

00:34:53: Like do they actually mix in things that may work in the mix but you would never think of.

00:35:04: One time I was listening to Walt And he was killing it with the boom bap, modern hip hop and then all of a sudden mixed in toto.

00:35:40: And I think it is those special moments where there are times when certain songs that i hear and if they don't have the pullback like...I learned this song with a mixtapes and its missing the heavy metal things FTC street smarts.

00:36:03: It was being doubled on a mixtape.

00:36:04: I can't remember which one, but like later... ...I heard the original song and it just doesn't hit in the same way because i'm expecting the beat juggling.

00:36:12: that thought happened there.

00:36:14: so if a DJ could do that and turn a song into the official version of the head's mind

00:36:20: you've

00:36:21: done something.

00:36:23: add it on.

00:36:24: The job is done, man.

00:36:25: And that's when you know your real DJ and a man of culture Is when you're able to like say play hip hop then Play some reggae playing rock R&B funk But it all makes sense.

00:36:44: That sounds similar in two songs but It has different music genres And you create the transition between both songs.

00:36:53: I remember watching Jazzy Jeff doing those type of things going from hip-hop to heavy metal.

00:37:25: And so we've been rocking together for most four years.

00:37:27: So the album that you hear waxing in Mecca is The Eighteen Songs That Came Out Of The Beginning of That Partnership.

00:37:34: There are a lot more songs than we have done together and We Have You Know A Lot Of Stuff In The Vault.

00:37:38: Um...the way i first met them was online.

00:37:42: It's just the modern age as to what things do.

00:37:46: If it wasn't For The Internet How Would I Ever Hook Up With You Guys?

00:37:50: They were like, yo you would have had to wait outside D&D studios and just wait for us to come out.

00:37:55: And then we'd've had a meet-us like that.

00:37:57: not That wouldn't been the only other way because especially a lot of DJs like there You know?

00:38:02: There are.

00:38:03: they're humble.

00:38:03: They like to stay home may go and rocked the party in Then they want to go home.

00:38:06: I don't wanna necessarily be out, you know Mixing it up and so you know.

00:38:11: II met them online.

00:38:12: Mr.. Walt had posted that he had a beat tape and I was like Listen, it's an all-time dream of mine to wrap over a Beat Miner's beat.

00:38:20: Let me just reach out and see if I can get the beat tape?

00:38:23: I got the beattape!

00:38:24: I purchased a beat from him... ...and um..I sent it to them And you know after awhile he hit me back.

00:38:31: He was like look You gotta come into this studio with me & E You've actually gotta let us work together To do a beat and have somebody write something That works.

00:38:42: But there is nothing but magic when we create together.

00:38:45: And so at first when we started, We weren't planning on doing an album.

00:38:49: We were just going to do a couple songs.

00:38:51: eventually that grew into three or four songs That we're like.

00:38:55: okay this is really starting the click together.

00:38:58: Let's work on any EP Or an Album.

00:39:00: and then it gots The point where instead of me picking out beats On a mixtape You know are on beat tape.

00:39:06: They Were actually custom making Beats for Me.

00:39:08: they'd be Like hey I made This one For you.

00:39:10: Now go rap To this One!

00:39:12: Then They Started Know My Style Started Know What They Wanted To Create From Me.

00:39:16: And then the next step, I think was really just.

00:39:19: we really trusted each other like to be free and so do new things.

00:39:23: And try things that were experimental and risky and maybe a little bit different than what we had normally done.

00:39:28: you know what i mean?

00:39:29: So I think I trusted them no matter What they gave me.

00:39:33: it Was something That was going To knock even if It wasn't The thing that would have Normally picked.

00:39:38: go ahead and Try to rock over it.

00:39:39: Then They trusted Me You Know Like One Thing I don't Do is I don't underestimate the listener.

00:39:45: I think a lot of people, they try to dumb it down and say like you know i'm gonna just...i wanna go over peoples heads and comment on things that are too far left And im not that rapper Like.

00:39:56: I talk about things That Are deep and I Talk About Things That Are all Over The Place.

00:40:00: I Talk about Literary Figures and Psychology and Physics.

00:40:05: You Know They Trusted Me To Say Hey He Can Do That But Still Make It Funky you know, lyrical and deep but also listenable.

00:40:14: And full of that sort-of thing people are looking for on the surface level at well right?

00:40:19: So I think it was just... It was developing that trust early on That really locked us in and got to a point where we felt like no matter what We had each other's back and were gonna try make the best music that we can.

00:40:31: But we liked listening too You know?

00:40:33: When we thought about ourselves more than trying to think anybody else outside world.

00:40:37: That's the recipe right there.

00:40:39: You just got to think about making dope music and I heard The whole project.

00:40:43: is it's cohesive, you know?

00:40:45: I like though a different vibe that you have on it Like it's not only one One by one type of sound, you?

00:40:52: no we actually touch on different subjects Different type of production as dope man.

00:40:56: It's very solid projects And now hope you guys do more together because I hear our chemistry.

00:45:01: The energy is different and good music has a good music especially as hip-hop fans...you know where that is man because i think its the only music genre That can make you discover new musics like i remember When i was listening to Jadakiss.

00:45:17: we gonna make it..when i was a kid man i don't know i was like ten or twelve years old something Like that....i didn't knew anything about samples And the day I found out about samples, yo that was like a big boom in my head bro.

00:45:30: Like this is crazy.

00:45:31: it's gonna open up to new music genres that i could never hear about.

00:45:36: I'm ten twelve years old.

00:45:38: how the hell do want me to find some soulful seventies joints by myself?

00:45:47: The beauty of hip-hop is that it's the only music genre... ...that has all other genres.

00:45:54: If you can rap to it It's part a hip hop And doesn't matter where you pull from it Could be any type of music if you can hook up into beat and put some rhythm To it, its Hip Hop All Of A sudden.

00:46:06: We don't feel that limitation That I think many other genres do.

00:46:09: They have just stick With certain sounds or instruments or tempos.

00:46:13: We really, it's all... You can go from sixty-six BPMs up to one twenty.

00:46:17: It is the whole spectrum

00:46:20: you know?

00:46:21: Yeah and open your mind too listening to stuff like classical music even traditional.

00:46:27: I don't know.

00:46:27: Indonesian Music whatever.

00:46:29: you know what i'm saying Like.

00:46:31: yeah

00:46:31: that opens your mind like crazy man.

00:46:34: And now that you work with beat miners do you realize as a hip hop fan what you just done, because it's something major for hip hop fans to work with the beat miners and have a full album produced by them.

00:46:53: You know?

00:46:54: Yeah no I mean... It is something that wake up almost every day and pinch myself Because its dream come true.

00:47:03: Young me would be so over-the moon happy about my doing right now And I don't take it for granted at all.

00:47:09: Like, i know its something that... It came from a lot of hard work and dedication.

00:47:13: like A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO START THINGS BUT THEY DON'T KNOW HOW To FINISH THINGS.

00:47:17: So working with the beat miners they really taught me how to finish records How make sure you dont just finish after first mix You do the mix then listen to it Then play in your car or home stereo Play on headphones then come back and mix again Then change stuff and move things around.

00:47:35: Keep working until it's really finished.

00:47:38: And so that's something, you know it is a gift.

00:47:43: I really feel blessed to be able learn from people who have long career of finishing records and doing crazy remixes like they've taken big hit record and made the remix better than their original.

00:48:01: That shows your level.

00:48:05: know how to continue to iterate and work on something until you get it right.

00:48:11: And, beyond working with Walton E who again at first I was starstruck of course like the first time i remember going in studio there's evil D!

00:48:19: Like i remember him standing one hand scratching me thinking that was the coolest fucking DJ like Gubai had ever seen anywhere y'know?

00:48:28: Now here he is but also those two in particular Walton e their brothers And they are also very, you know it's a family affair.

00:48:39: Like once you work with them its like my family at this point.

00:48:42: You know what I mean?

00:48:43: So we got that family vibe really early on and then They brought Smith & Wesson into the studio.

00:48:51: so when Smith & Weston Got On The Record It wasn't just them recording in their place We got In The Studio together.

00:48:56: When Craig G&I did That Record To Joint We sat and wrote back-and-forth together in the studio, same way that they used to do back then.

00:49:04: That's all because of Walt and me creating an environment where these dope artists want to come over their beats again.

00:49:13: I took it as honor but also a responsibility.

00:49:17: When you look at your discography or catalog this record is part of legacy.

00:49:24: so i have live upto bar.

00:49:28: You know what I mean?

00:49:29: So it's part of the reason we took so much time and worked so long on this?

00:49:33: because... ...I didn't want anything weak at all coming across.

00:49:38: It

00:49:39: is never going to be weak when you have a dope MC in the building, legendary producers guys like Craig G Smith & Wesson.

00:49:47: You cannot go wrong bro!

00:49:49: Yes exactly

00:49:51: yeah man You know, we might have some young hip-hop fans listening to the show.

00:49:56: And that's so dope!

00:49:57: To have like fifteen or seventeen years old come up and say yo it's dope man, boom back shit is dope.

00:50:03: So you've been in a game for awhile...you made some major moves.

00:50:08: What could you tell the young MCs?

00:50:10: Like what type of advice would they give them?

00:50:13: Well I think The first thing i'd say as part of reason why im good as I am Is because I listen to alot of Hip Hop.

00:50:21: Okay, I listened to a lot and i memorized other people's raps And I would sit in.

00:50:25: I would rap buck shots raps and I would wrap most devs wraps and I Would?

00:50:30: I would write black thought you know and uh-and I would practice how To actually vocalize the things that they were doing Which then made it easier for me when I went to write my own stuff to incorporate That without you know, without it feeling like I was copying.

00:50:45: You know what i mean?

00:50:45: Because the first thing you want to do is be original and make sure that you have your own voice And don't wanna be like anybody else.

00:50:53: The biggest mistake a lot of these youngsters makes Is they just try to imitate whatever sound is popular at this time.

00:51:04: There's reason why BoomBap is timeless Like boombap isn't something a shelf life to me.

00:51:10: Like the stuff that, like if you find a record from the nineties that You never heard before it sounds just as fresh today As If It Was A Brand New Record.

00:51:19: and I think That was because back then everybody was trying To be original Everybody's Trying To Put Their Own Stamp On Things.

00:51:25: And Now i Think A Lot Of Rappers Do Just Sort of Try To Get With The Trend And Get Whatever Is The Sound They Hear on The Radio.

00:51:33: And I Would Just Say Hey Try To Find Your Own Style.

00:51:38: stand on the shoulders of people who came before, you learn things that they did.

00:51:42: And I've been part of a group called Pendulum

00:51:46: Inc.,

00:51:47: which is a program that Mickey Fax put together.

00:51:50: Mickey Facts was fantastic artist former XXL freshman but also just like an elite Penn and an elite emcee, a bad rapper named Tilly Jones.

00:52:01: A bunch of other professors Jeff Walker or Rhymecology rap seminar put this program together And what they did is They came up with you know there are techniques that rappers use when they write verses?

00:52:12: And it came up like terms to define It You Know.

00:52:15: and they started to label these things Like good.

00:52:17: example Is something's called a letter for right and What it is is like you have a bar.

00:52:23: It's like a metaphor.

00:52:24: but your talking about the way that a letter sounds or looks inside of rhyme.

00:52:28: Like, for famous example this is Little Wayne where he's like real Gs move in silence like lasagna because the g and lasagna silent right?

00:52:35: So thats'a letter for it!

00:52:37: And so once you identify the technique and give it name then you can be more intentional with how think about your work into You know, and you can start to be a little bit more strategic about how you plan your verse out.

00:52:50: And I like to think of it almost as figure skater where the figure skaters have to go from beginning until end they put together routine that relates with one another then throw in those feats extreme athleticism or do something extremely athletic.

00:53:08: That's what vocal techniques are.

00:53:12: How did he do that?

00:53:13: Like, how does she do That.

00:53:16: And I think you don't have to Do it on every bar.

00:53:20: in fact if You do too much of It gets distracting and people can't Comprehend what's.

00:53:25: the message that you're trying To say is just lyrical tricks here In there.

00:53:28: so its like...how do find that middle ground where You throw a couple in There but still keep The whole performance connected and tied together?

00:53:36: If you can do those things and your just yourself, like make music that you like.

00:53:40: Make Music That You Want to Listen To for Yourself... ...you'll never fail!

00:53:46: There is no such thing as failure if you Do Those Things.

00:53:48: there's only Just Degrees of Success.

00:53:49: Beyond

00:53:49: That I agree with you man.

00:53:51: it's a science you know to be A master Of Words Like Dead you Know And Being able to say..like you said you know?

00:53:59: To step from using all those brand Patterns & Schemes sometimes Focus on the message that you're trying to tell people.

00:54:07: Not just rapping, do some cool shit but also about a message and when they know how to do both... Man your elite MCs!

00:54:17: That's what we say it man.

00:54:19: And I might not be saying this right.

00:54:21: so have heard of Ulipo?

00:54:23: It is French Literary Society.

00:54:25: Do You Know About These Folks?

00:54:28: So the Ulipo, and again I'm probably not saying it right but It was a group of writers who got together to write poetry And their focus would be on constraints.

00:54:37: They'd say hey like there's one that they call Pilish where every word in the rhyme is going To have digits of pi for the syllable count.

00:54:47: so first i'll do three syllable words then i will do One syllable or four syllable words.

00:54:52: So like Mickey Fax did this song called A-minus where the whole song was about The Letter A, the origins of the letter a but he didn't use a single letter a in the whole Song.

00:55:03: Like He didn't used any words that had to letter a and it.

00:55:05: so he gave himself That constraint.

00:55:07: you said I'm gonna constrain myself And somehow that then creates something.

00:55:10: It's greater than what would have been if You just open the freedom again.

00:55:13: This came from an old French literary society concept, right?

00:55:17: So like it's connected.

00:55:18: Everything that we do in hip-hop is connected to things people have done before and were just doing for todays agent interpreted from the audience.

00:55:25: When you're a real MC or rap you need to be man of literature also.

00:55:29: You know its not only about rap but your master of words man.

00:55:34: And thats how when you are great MC or average MC?

00:55:39: Yes sir indeed

00:55:42: For sure.

00:55:45: Do you have any last words for your fans and supporters all across the globe?

00:55:50: Well, first off again Thank You for being part Of The Culture.

00:55:53: thank you for keeping This culture alive.

00:55:55: this thing has meant so much to me To the point that you made earlier.

00:55:58: there's So many times In my life where I heard A song and i went to go find The sample not open up new work New worlds and music for Me.

00:56:04: There are so Many Times Where I heard a rapper say word and I didn't know What it meant.

00:56:08: so I Went and looked It Up and Expanded My Vocabulary like hip-hop And the culture has made me a better man.

00:56:13: It's made me smarter than I would have been if i didn't have it and so just thank you for continuing to build it, being part of it... Being a fan in this culture..and being a sustainer of it.

00:56:27: That's my main message that people want us to understand.

00:56:28: Is that I remember before hip hop got mainstream And it felt like something special that was just for us.

00:56:35: Then, we went to this commercial route and everybody started chasing after money and became about money.

00:56:44: We have that magic bag then in which we felt like got killed.

00:56:48: It didn't get killed but still here As long as you support each other or keep your community going its enough Like...we don't need Sprite We dont' need McDonald's You know..We Just Need Us.

00:56:58: And I think that again, if people free themselves from this idea of what it means to get on or What?

00:57:04: It means to be successful and just focus on adding To the culture and adding on we'll Be all right.

00:57:10: We will All have a place where you can go.
